Trees planted for new forest school
Work on our brand new forest school started today, with Tom Planner from the Woodland Trust planting the very first tree for the project.
Head Teacher, Steph Guthrie, said: “Outdoor learning has shown to have many long term benefits for children's health, wellbeing, mental and physical development so giving our children a dedicated space for hands on learning will be wonderful. They will have a chance to shape what is created, and be part of something really special for our school.”
Sixty trees, in a variety of species, have been donated by the Woodland Trust to get the project started and representatives from the conservation charity visited the school to discuss the trees’ positioning and care.
Local charity, Spadework, will also be supporting the project and will help to develop allotments for the children to use to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
Additionally, building company, Jenner, who are working on a development near the school, will also lend a hand by supplying logs they have cut to create a seating area in the outdoor classroom.
Reception Class teacher, Kate Wood, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the support we have been offered, from local charities, organisations and building firm, Jenner, who have all been incredibly helpful, kind and professional. A parent of one of our Year 5 students will also be lending us his expertise and supplying us with soil and fertiliser for the forest school. We’re all very excited about the project which is a great opportunity for both children and staff to be part of something amazing which will benefit us all.”
