Year 3 Trip to Samphire Hoe
On Thursday 23 November, Year 3 had a fabulous trip to Samphire Hoe. Our science learning really came to life as Ranger Paul had us sniffing soil, searching for fossils, completing a beach scavenger hunt and helped us to think more deeply about how the rocks are formed and what properties they have.
The site of Samphire Hoe is a fascinating place, and it was amazing to learn that the beautiful nature reserve was once the sea, and after that a derelict brownfield site covered in broken lorries and neglected machinery parts from the channel tunnel build. Over time the area has developed to be an incredibly rich habitat of rare birds, wildflowers, and incredible biodiversity.
The children enjoyed the hands-on learning experience and produced some beautiful observational drawings of their fossils and ‘beach finds’ while we were there.
